Historically, the Nova Scotia Potato Marketing Board has been administered as an independent Affiliated Group administered by annual agreement with Horticulture Nova Scotia (Association).
In July 2024, NSPMB formally requested to the Natural Products Marketing Council the revocation of the NS Potato Marketing Plan and the wind-up of this board; effective that month, NSPMB ceased issuing packing licenses, registering potato producers, or collecting levies. Potato as a commodity has been moved to Horticulture Nova Scotia.
Originally formed to oversee the industry and its marketing needs when Frito-Lay was the main customer and most grew chipping potatoes, over time chipping potatoes started being brought in from PEI and the number of pounds of potatoes being grown in Nova Scotia diminished. Now, though potatoes are still grown in the province, it is not enough to sustain a board.
The closure is in progress.
